Many of these early Wodehouse stories are no longer under US copyright protection. This copy does not even say when the work was first published; it was in 1905. Only if you are a serious scholar of Wodehouse would I recommend these early works. You can see the Wodehouse technique and some of his favorite humorous phrasing, but the early school stories fall well short of the later classics of Jeeves & Bertie and Blandings Castle. His use of the slang of cricket and England that was apparently used in 1905 makes for fairly difficult understanding.

The Head of Kay P G Wodehouse 9781490981512 Books Reviews

The story of some young men in College in England.

Has quite a bit of Cricket in the story. As an American unfamiliar with the game, this made parts of the book difficult to follow.

Some old style words used in the story are amusing, like the reference to "f-a-g-s" (first year college students). {The word "f-a-g-s" is scattered thoughout the story, but 's word filter does not like me using it in a book review, so I had to alter the word}

The students played a game of football, which is the English term used for Soccer.

The story ended with a sports event between the college houses. To me the ending felt week and I was dissapointed.

I normally read Wodehouse for the humor. While the story had some amusing parts, in general this is not a funny story. While I did finish the story, I really did not enjoy it.

Big sports fams, especially Cricket, may enjoy the story more.
Unwodehousian
Excellent story by a brilliant author, I definitely recommend a basic understanding of Cricket and Soccer/Football. That said, I enjoyed it anyway! The characters are charming and the insight into the British school system of the day is interesting.
I don't enjoy Wodehouse's public school books as much as the country estate books in the first place and this one is not as good as the other public school books. I will only say that the boys seem to solve the problems, or the problems get solved, much to easily. This it is Wodehouse with all his richness of language so 3 stars.
I don't play cricket, and didn't go to "public" school in England, so half of the terminology is lost on me. There are funny bits, though, which kept me reading.
its wodehouse
I'm a diehard Wodehouse fan but his early "school days" books are a hard slog through cricket matches, rugby games, boxing bouts, and track and field events. There are glimmers of Woodhouse humor, but lots of schoolboy sporting events.
